Treat a past question as a diagnostic tool
Past papers show the types of thinking a course has tested previously, not a guarantee that the same items will appear again. Write down the paper’s course code and year/session before using it so you can recognise the scope and age of the material.
Start with the learning objectives of the official course material. If the paper tests a concept that the current material no longer covers, flag the mismatch rather than assuming the current examination will repeat it.
Separate questions, answers and explanations
Attempt the question before looking at an answer key. For multiple-choice items, note why the correct option fits and why the distractors do not. For essay questions, compare the parts requested with the structure of your response.
A model answer may be independently developed rather than an official marking guide. Use it as a study aid and cross-check claims with reliable course material.
Work through a repeated concept, not a repeated sentence
Imagine three papers all ask about research sampling using different examples. Instead of memorising the wording, learn probability and non-probability sampling, when each approach is appropriate and its limitations.
Practice transformation
- Original skill: Distinguish random sampling from convenience sampling.
- New scenario: A researcher interviews the first 30 people entering a clinic.
- Answer: Convenience sampling, because participants are selected by accessibility rather than a random selection mechanism.
- Follow-up: Rewrite the plan so each eligible participant has a known, nonzero selection chance.
Keep an error register
Create a table or notebook with the question topic, attempt date, misconception and corrected explanation. Revisit difficult topics after a delay. Record the improvement in reasoning, not just whether the final answer matches a letter.
If a past question contains ambiguous wording or defective options, label it as uncertain and preserve the original item. Do not silently rewrite it into an apparently official question.
Make your practice transferable to exam day
Complete at least one timed set using your allowed exam format. Rotate across units rather than drilling only familiar topics, and include written answers when the examination is pen-on-paper.
Avoid sources advertising guaranteed questions or exam leaks. Study responsibly and follow academic-integrity rules.
Your practical checklist
- Every paper has a course code and session/year where available.
- I attempted questions before reading answers.
- I can explain why each selected option is correct.
- I have revisited previously missed topics.
